- Leucothoe axillaris, Coastal Dog Hobble. Evergreen. Dark green leathery leaves. Fragrant racemes of white blooms hang from arching branches April to May. Fall foliage color is an attractive reddish purple. Prefers semi-shaded woodland conditions. Well-drained soil but with regular water.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 6-11. Mature Size: 4 feet high and 3 feet wide, but might get larger in the Deep South.
- Leucothoe populifolia, Florida Agarista, Fetterbush. Rare plant. Evergreen. Bright green small lance-shaped leaves and an arching habit. Fragrant white urn-shaped blooms in May and June. Prefers partial sun or shade. Hardiness: USDA Zones 6 - 11. Mature Size: 8 - 12 feet tall. Foliage is useful in floral arrangements.
